5 What is Public Health? Public health is concerned with the health of a population rather than individuals. It is about promoting well-being, not just dealing with illness, and looks at the impact on health of social, economic, political and environmental factors as well as individual behaviour.

7 Key Areas of Public Health Practice 1. Surveillance and assessment of the population’s well-being 2.Assessing the evidence of effectiveness of interventions, programmes and services intended to improve the health or well-being of individuals or populations 3. Policy and strategy development and implementation 4. Strategic leadership and collaborative working for health 5. Health improvement 6. Health protection 7. Health and social service quality 8. Public health intelligence 9. Academic public health

8 Entry requirements for doctors Full GMC registration Completion of an F2 programme, or the equivalent competencies Entrants with a longer period of clinical or other postgraduate experience are welcome One national recruitment drive annually. Starts in January Usually appoint nine new entrants in the NW. Start in August

9 The Training Programme Mersey Deanery organise the Training Programme for the North West Training period is 5 years if full-time. Part-time and flexible working is available There are 3 phases of learning Complete a Masters in Public Health in Phase 1 Pass Part A of the membership exam in Phase 1 Pass Part B in Phase 2 Health protection placement and on-call training in Phase 2 Assessed through Work based assessments Annual Review Competence Progression ( ARCP)
