2. Background for the War... Two Sides: -North:
More industrial, machine labor, more urban, better transportation, more immigrants, few slaves (only border states)
-South:
Agricultural, large plantations, human labor, rural, about ⅓ of population owned slaves

3. The War between the States, 1861-1865
The Union (USA)
19 Northern states (plus 4 border states) that wanted to remain in the Union. Led by President Abraham Lincoln.
Confederacy (CSA)
11 Southern states eventually seceded (left the Union) after the election of President Lincoln because they feared he was going to try to end slavery. Led by President Jefferson Davis.

4. Advantages of Each Side
Union
Controlled most of the finances
Larger population
More industry and resources
More farmland dedicated to growing food
More mobile- railroads, navy
Better Political Leadership (Lincoln)
Confederacy
Highly motivated to fight because they were the ones fighting to preserve their way of life.
Fought more defensively- less loss of life, supplies, etc.
“Home field advantage”- more familiar with the land
More valuable exports (Cotton)
Better Military Leadership (Generals)

5. Disadvantages of Each Side
Union
North had to invade the South and forcefully bring them back to the Union.
Northerners had less of a reason to fight. Limited support for the war effort.
Lack of Military leadership.
Confederacy
Even though an agricultural economy, didn’t grow many food crops.
Less free men to serve as soldiers.
Fewer factories and railroads.
No organized government at first.
Believed in States rights which made working together more difficult.

6. Brother vs. Brother
-Families often had relatives fighting on both sides.
-Many officers on both sides had fought together for the US in earlier wars
African Americans served on both sides

7. Costs of War Approximately 620,000 people died
War cost about $6.19 Billion- equal to about $146 Billion today
Many cities, farms, railroads, etc. (especially in the South) were totally destroyed
Former slaves now didn’t have a place to go or jobs- leads to future problems.
