Sink Scum You are a plumber with an exceptional background in chemistry and you are asked to look at some ooze building up under a local sink. You collect a sample and bring it back to your lab to analyze. The panicking customer wants an accurate, precise, typed, and individual lab report by Tuesday, September 15 th.

Formal Lab Report 1. Title (defining) - 1 or 2 words 2. Purpose (defining) – 1 or 2 complete sentences 3. Materials (observing) – list 4. Procedure (observing ) – numbered steps (no 1 st person) 5. Data (observing) – tables and charts (all quantitative data with proper units and qualitative data) 6. Analysis (generalizing) – 1 or 2 paragraphs (include one legitimate source of error and explain specific effects on results) 7. Conclusions (generalizing) – questions to answer

Conclusion Questions 1. What was your unknown # ? 2. What is your unknown identity and why do you think so? 3. What is your % error (with 3 sig digs) for your density calculation? 4. Using the actual density, what is the mass in kilograms of 750 mL of your unknown? 5. Using the actual density, what is the volume in liters of 1.20 x 10 5 g of your unknown?

Unit 2 Review – Units/Measurements Problem solving – factor label method Scientific Notation - # x 10 n Accuracy vs. precision Measurements in lab Significant Digits – purpose, counting them, rounding with them, math with them Units – Basic vs. derived, converting with prefixes Density – what is it conceptually and mathematically

Unit 2 Review – Test Breakdown 10 counting sig digs (1 pt each) 6 scientific notation (1 pt each) 6 rounding (1 pt each) 4 calculator math (2 pts each) 5 multiple choice (2 pts each) 3 conversions (5 pts each) 2 word problems (6 pts each) 6 measurements (3 pts each) 2 data analysis problems (6 pts each)
