1 HOW CAN YOU GIVE WRITING A PURPOSE? WHAT DOES PURPOSEFUL WRITING LOOK LIKE? Journal

2 Purpose: Why am I writing this? (to explain, to give reasons why, to persuade, to inform, to describe, to compare & contrast) Audience: To whom am I writing? (this influences word choice, sentence structure & content) Context: Is this a letter, editorial, article, essay, speech? What is the social, historical, cultural setting?

3 Example: Write an editorial to your local newspaper to persuade local citizens to become more involved in the Red Cross in your town. P- to persuade local citizens to become more involved in the Red Cross in your town A- local citizens C- an editorial to your local newspaper

4 2006 Expository Prompt Most students could suggest changes that would make a classroom more comfortable. Think about what changes you believe would make a classroom more comfortable. Now explain what changes you would make to a classroom to make it more comfortable.

5 2006 Persuasive Prompt The state legislation is considering lowering the voting age from 18 to 16. Think about whether or not you think the voting age should be lowered from 18 to 16. Now write to persuade a state legislator to accept your opinion on whether or not to lower the voting age from 18 to 16.

6 2001 Persuasive Prompt Most students would like the opportunity to create a new school holiday. Think about a new school holiday you would enjoy. Now write to convince your local school board to add your new holiday to the school calendar.

7 As a group, P.A.C. the following prompt: Most teenagers enjoy being teenagers. Think about what you enjoy most about being a teenager. Now explain what you enjoy most about being a teenager.

8 Exit Visa P. A.C. the following: Many people wish they could spend time with a particular person. Think about a person you might like to spend a day with. Now explain why you might choose to spend a day with that particular person.

9 Journal P.A.C. the following prompt: The school board is considering changing it’s policy on study halls in high school. Think about whether or not high school students should have a study hall. Now write to persuade the school board that high school students should or should not have a study hall.

10 RAFT Carousel Brainstorming Activity: R = Role (Whose perspective are they writing from? Are they a student? A character?) A = Audience (Who are they writing to?) F = Format (Is it an essay? A letter? A brochure?) T = Topic (What are they writing about?)

29 Observing: Brainstorming/Prewriting: Drafting: Revising: Sharing: Second Revision: Final Revision & Editing: Publishing:

30 Observing Pay special attention to the little details in your surroundings and think about something you can write about in class.

31 Brainstorming/Prewriting Brainstorm a list of all the things you noticed that you could write about. Choose a few from your list and add a few more details or ideas to each.

32 Drafting Write a brief paragraph about one of the ideas you wrote down.

33 Revising Look over your piece and change to better verbs and nouns. Add any details you might have left out. Remove anything that seems unnecessary.

34 Sharing Ask a peer to look at your paragraph and suggest a way to improve. Read it aloud to hear the fluency.

35 Second Revision Make changes suggested by peers and any other changes you feel are necessary. Read aloud again to listen for fluency − change sentence structure and/or length to improve fluency.

36 Final Revision and Editing Check carefully for any spelling and/or grammatical mistakes.

37 Publishing Write a final version as neatly as possible and place a copyright symbol next to your name.
