THE BOSTON TEA PARTY

Why did they create the Tea Act?  To avoid the tax, Colonists were buying tea from other countries.  Then in 1773, the Tea Act was created  The Tea Act stated that colonists MUST buy tea from Britain  What was going on with the British East India Company at this time?

 Colonists were afraid they would lose their business/jobs because colonists had to buy their tea from the East India Company. And they would sell it for cheaper because it was NOT taxed!  So, many colonists were buying British made tea instead of tea in the colonies!

 So the colonies began to boycott British made tea.  Some British ships turned back to England because the tea would not sell and others just sat in the harbor to rot.

Boston Tea Party  In Boston, colonists led by Samuel Adams, disguised themselves and dressed like Mohawk Indians and stormed the ship!

 Winter night of Thursday, December 16, 1773.  According to eyewitness testimonies, the Boston Tea Party occurred between the hours of 7:00 and 10:00 PM  That means it lasted for approximately three hours.  How many colonists? We have 116 people who claim they participated… some could have stayed in secret as well.  All males from Boston and the surrounding area

 The colonists dumped 90,000 pounds of tea into the water.  That’s 342 boxes which, in total, weighed 45 tons of tea!  Worth: £10,000= Over $1,000,000 worth today

“No taxation without representation!” Review: What caused the Boston Tea Party?
