Section 1.3 The atmosphere
Chapter 1 Section 1.3 The atmosphere

Atmosphere Made up of layers: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 0.04% Carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide (CO2) Plants use this to make food, then release oxygen (O2) Released into the atmosphere by volcanic eruptions and whenever fuels such as wood, coal, or gasoline is burned Lets sunlight in and traps the heat! GREENHOUSE EFFECT!

Troposphere Troposphere- the layer of the atmosphere that touches the surface of the Earth Contains most of the water vapor Where weather occurs

Stratosphere Stratosphere- beyond the troposphere, reaching a height of 50 km above Earth Upper stratosphere contains ozone Ozone- form of oxygen gas containing three oxygen atoms per molecule

Ozone Importance: filters out most of the ultraviolet or UV radiation given off from the sun Without this layer, life on Earth would be destroyed!!!

Mesosphere Mesosphere- coldest layer of the atmosphere, with temperatures as low as degrees Celsius!

Thermosphere Thermosphere- outermost layer of the atmosphere
Experiences temperatures as high as 2000 degrees Celsius!!! Gas molecules receive intense heat from the sun, they become loose electrons and become ions. This is known as the ionosphere.

Ionosphere Ionosphere- part of the thermosphere
Gas molecules reunite with free electrons and light is given off. This usually occurs at the poles---Aurora!

Review!!! Which layer of the atmosphere contains the ionosphere? Why does this layer have this name? Why is the ozone layer important to living things? People who live at sea level often have trouble breathing at the tops of high mountains. Why do you think this is true?

Chapter 1 Section 1.4 The Biosphere

Biosphere Biosphere- all the parts of Earth that support and contain life If Earth were an apple, the layer that supports life would be only about as thick as the apple’s skin!!!

Life on Earth Life is usually limited to the tops of mountains and deep in the ocean because of high pressure and less oxygen available All organisms depend on all parts of the biosphere to survive

Biosphere Organisms find the energy they need from all parts of the biosphere Example: Trees use the sunlight for food, rocks for anchoring, soil for nutrients, water for living

Review!!! What parts of Earth make up the biosphere?
List two ways in which you interact with each of the three parts of the biosphere everyday. In what ways does each part of the biosphere contribute to the production of food you eat?
