Instructional Design The practice of arranging media and content to help learners and teachers transfer knowledge effectively

Why?  To determine the current state of learner understanding  Defines goals of instruction  Creates media to assist in transition of learning  Observable and measured outcomes

How to make it effective?  Establish learning goals  Designed to facilitate the learning process  Practical web design strategies and guidelines  Instructional design structured and interactive  Ease of use For optimal e-learning, remember…. The BRAIN can only take so much information at once.

Instructional Design Model Make it easy for your users  Simple navigation -Well thought out text -Good organizational pattern -Don’t start linking without thinking

Instructional Design Model Make it easy for your users  Create Effective Menus -Avoid disorientation -Highly visible, interactive and intuitive -Embedded search aids -Keep menus shallow but meaningful

Instructional Design Model Make it easy for your users  Try to Include: -Index (Contents of the site) -Glossary -Related links page -Use an efficient search engine -Online help -Bookmarking -Clear identifiable content -Appropriate headings and titles -Most important information on the top left

Problems with a design ?  Easy to get lost in  Unstructured  Non-Interactive  Complex  Time Consuming  Accessibility  Lack of speed  Absence of security

Examples of Instructional Design Models ADDIE Model- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADDIE_Modelhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADDIE_Model Acronym stands for the 5 phases contained in the model -Analyze -Design -Develop -Implement -Evaluate IMS Learning Design- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMS_Learning_Designhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMS_Learning_Design Supports the use of a wide range of pedagogies in online learning Dick and Carey Model- http://www.sjsu.edu/depts/it/itcdpdf/isddickncarey.pdfhttp://www.sjsu.edu/depts/it/itcdpdf/isddickncarey.pdf The model is based on the idea that instruction can be broken down into smaller components, that in pedagogical terms can be described as measurable knowledge and skills.

Rationale for Instructional Design of Classroom Blog and Menu Project * See it at: http://mweisenreder.wordpress.com/ -To make classroom available beyond the classroom walls. -To engage, and enrich the material discussed in class. -To increase time spent on” hand on” activities in lab but not at the expense of getting students information, increased learning opportunities, and scaffolding class menu project.

Goals of Instructional Design of My Culinary Class Blog http://mweisenreder.wordpress.com/ http://mweisenreder.wordpress.com/  Learning Objectives -Interactive process that makes use of technology -To engage students beyond classroom walls -Get students to use wealth of resources available to them on the net -Resource for additional learning opportunities -Give students another chance to see material they may have missed in class -Further understanding and/or review -Communication tool -Break class project into smaller steps -Inform and Perform

 Effective Instruction? -Promotes interaction -Communication tool -Provides instructional material  Creating Effective Instruction? http://mweisenreder.wordpress.com/ -Material presented clearly -Teacher provided feedback -Attention paid to modalities  Was Instruction effective? -Get student feedback -Job relevancy -Results of menu project
