2 By My Spirit “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. “ -Zechariah 4:6

3 Ephesians 4:25-32 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22
Hurting God’s Heart

4 Ephesians 4:25-32 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

5 Not Good Grief Three helpers make it easier to define grieving the Holy Spirit The other commands surrounding the paragraph Isaiah 63:7-10 The immediate context before and after verse 30 Grieving the Holy Spirit has to do with rebellious , sinful acts, and specifically from this context, unholy speech from our lips. Grief is the disappointing of the Holy Spirit to the point that He might even be vexed and judge us for our rebellion as He did Israel.

6 Isaiah 63:7-10 7 I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord, the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that he has granted them according to his compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love. 8 For he said, “Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely.” And he became their Savior. 9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. 10 But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.

7 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

8 Fire Extinguishers Are Bad
Quench is a great word to maintain the metaphor of the Spirit as fire. We have seen this as Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Also, there is Pentecost in Acts 2, where the Spirit comes in tongues of fire. To quench the Spirit then is to stop His works or to dampen His effectiveness or to suppress His desires. It is to hinder His work!

9 Fire Extinguishers Are Bad
This idea of quenching the Spirit might more specifically concern the gifts of the Spirit. Prophecy is mentioned in the next verse. It is possible that there was a malpractice of the gifts and they stopped using them completely! Cessationism (1 Cor 13:8) is not biblical according to this verse. Instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, we must have Spirit-led leaders who facilitate the moving and exercise of the Holy Spirit’s free reign in our church!
