3 Reference Upper Air Network (GRUAN), Lindenberg, Germany, 26-28 February 2008: Lauder, New Zealand within NDACC National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research UV-visible spectroscopy: BrO (1995-present), NO 2 (1981-present) FTIR spectroscopy: HCl, HNO 3, ClONO 2, HF, CFCs, CO & GHG Dobson, balloon sondes, lidar, microwave radiometer: ozone Aerosol lidar UV spectrometer Chemistry Climate Modelling

4 Status of NIWA NDACC UV-vis stations: Kiruna (67.8N), ceased in April 2010, archived from July 1996 Moshiri/Rikubetsu (44.4N), archived from April 1991- December 2007, instrument status probably ok but need more time to quality-check and process. Mauna Loa (19.5N), failed on 1 March 2008, was replaced with a new instrument (NO2 and BrO) on 28 April 2009 until present; occasional small hick-ups. Lauder (45.0S), archived from Dec 1980, quality check and processing up-to-date. Macquarie Island (54.5S), quality check and processing up-to-date., proposal to AAD (for logistics support) highly likely successful to continue measurements. Arrival Heights (77.8S), archived since 1991, quality check and processing up-to-date

5 Future of NIWA NDACC UV-visible stations & research: Currently very uncertain – funding will be substantially reduced from July 2012 onwards. What does this mean? Best case scenario: measurements continue without any support until any problems arise …. Worst case: feel free to use your imagination MAX-DOAS seen as very low priority in NIWA’s science interests and will most likely at this stage not further be supported.
