The industrial revolution had both positive and negative effects…. Positive Negative Mass production Better transportation Better technology Living standards poor Working conditions substandard Child labor

3 Government Reform Reform: To Change
The government made changes to help aid the negative effects of the IR They targeted child labor, working conditions, and living conditions

4 Living Standards REform
Building codes passed Fire exits All apartments must have at least 1 window Heat and fresh air Police force increased Prisons expanded Crime preventative Sewage systems expanded *Urban planning*

5 Working conditions Write down at least two examples:
Safety regulations on machines Fire safety plans Employees must get breaks every few hours Employees must receive lunch break Minimum wage No more than 8 hours a day Weekends off

6 Child Labor At first – the government did not believe that child labor was a big deal It was the last reform to be made Michael Sadler was a representative in Parliament He held a series of interviews to demonstrate the atrocities of child labor The result is the passing of the Factories Regulation Act 1833

No one under 18 can work at night 1.5 hours for meals when working 12 hours Cannot work machinery

10 Results of Government reform
Standard of living increased and working conditions improved As a result – there were NOT communist revolutions as Marx predicted (not yet) This was because the government responded to the needs of the people (against the wishes of Smith) This created a mixed economy in Great Britain – Free market based on supply and demand (invisible hand), with government regulation, and producing traditionally valued products
