2. Nigeria- Facts Nigeria gets it’s name from the Niger River. It flows through central and western Nigeria. One of the largest African nations. Nigeria is more than twice the size of California.

3. Geographic landscape of Nigeria There is a long coastline in Nigeria. The coastline is along the Gulf of Guinea. The land is covered by a MANGROVE SWAMP Most of the country has tropical savanna climates with high average temps and seasonal rains. Winds blow from the Sahara, and the grass lands are dry.

4. Economics Where does the major income in Nigeria come from?

5. Oil! Exactly! More than 90% of the countries income comes from oil. In the 1980’s oil prices dropped and the Nigerian economy became troubled. People left their farms to find better paying jobs. Low rainfall meant little farming was going on. Exporting was min. they had to start importing food.

6. More on eco… Most people did farm- just for their families. Some things that the Nigerian people farm/produce are: –Rubber –Peanuts –Palm oil –Cacao (leading producer of this bean used in chocolate)

7. What about the people??? 133.9 people live in Nigeria. More than any other country in Africa. Most people live on the coast. WHY???

8. Answer: Water source for farming… further away from the dry and desert. Easier access t ports for exports/imports…

9. Family The Nigeria people have a close connection to family. They live close together. 60% are Muslim, 40% Christian, other worship traditional African religions.

10. History & government Earliest inhabitants were known as the NOKS. They were known as skilled metal workers and traders. In 1960 Nigeria became an independent country. Not until 1999 could the Nigerian people vote for a president.
