2 Words to Know Self-esteem - the way you feel about yourself. Stress- the body’s response to change Stressor- Anything that causes stress. Fight or flight response- The process by which the body prepares to deal with a stressor.

5 Emotions Emotions – Feelings created in response to thoughts, remarks, and events. Emotional needs – Needs that affect your feelings and sense of well-being.

6 Types of Emotions Anger- is a strong feeling of displeasure Empathy- the ability to understand and share another person’s feelings. Fear- a response to physical and emotional danger Happiness- a sense of well being Jealousy- resentment or unhappiness of another’s misfortune. Love- combination of caring and affection. Sadness – a normal healthy reaction to an unhappy event. Sympathy- the ability to understand and share another’s problems or sorrows

11 Homework In your opinion, what causes the most stress ? List your top five. List what you think are your parents top five. Now, take the assignment home and have your parents complete. In your parents’ opinion, what causes the most stress? Have them identify what they think are your top five. Have them identify their top five. Compare the two lists and discuss with them. Bring both lists to class.

20 Mass Media Mass media powerfully influences our perceptions of beauty, our attitude toward others, and our own self- image. The media promotes images that can harm our self- esteem and tempt us to do unhealthy or expensive acts to try and live up to the beauty ideals we see through media.

21 Media Messages about Bodies The media presents messages about “ideal” body types for both men and women. Men are expected to be muscular, strong, violent, masculine, aggressive, tough, and dominant. Women are expected to be feminine, thin, dainty, and passive.

22 GI Joe vs. Barbie GI Joe and Barbie represent an unrealistic body type that can lead to damaging self-esteem. If Barbie were a full size female her measurements would be 32-17-28. This is typical of a woman suffering from anorexia. GI Joe ( action figures) send messages that boys are powerful and important, that boys do great things, and fight the bad guys to protect the innocent. Action figures are becoming grotesquely muscular. Biceps bigger than their heads Both toys represent unrealistic and virtually impossible body types for any human to attain.

23 Statistics The average American woman is 5’4 and 140 pounds The average fashion model is 5’11 and 115 pounds Models are thinner than 98% of American women 80% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance 25% of men and 45% of women are on a diet Approx. 7 million girls/women struggle with eating disorders Approx. 1 million boys/men struggle with eating disorders

24 The Beauty Industries Our insecurities about our size, shape and appearance of our bodies has created a multi-billion dollar economy. Fashion/Cosmetics/Fragrance/Weight Loss/Cosmetic Surgery Clothing is designed to suit the tall, thin frames. The cosmetic industry suggests that freckles, pores, fine lines, and wrinkles are to be covered and hidden. (airbrush) We spend $20 billion a year on cosmetics to help us try and conform to society and look like what we see in the media.

25 Our distorted view of the media is the poison in the blood of society. We need to open our eyes and see the reality of the world, not the media’s view on it.
