2.4 Biconditional Statements and Definitions Textbook pg 96

Biconditional Statement When you combine a conditional statement and its converse, you create a biconditional statement It can be written in the form “p if and only if q” or “p iff q” This means p → q AND p → q

Write the Converse and the Biconditional Statement for each Conditional: If the student is a sophomore, then the student is in the 10 th grade Converse: If a student is in the 10 th grade, then the student is a sophomore Biconditional: A student is a sophomore if and only if the student is in the 10 th grade. If two segments have the same length, then they are congruent Converse Biconditional:

Write the conditional and the converse found in each Biconditional Statement: Two angles are congruent if and only if their measures are equal. Conditional: If the two angles are congruent, then their measures are equal Converse: If two angle measures are equal, then the angles are congruent. Perry can paint the entire living room if and only if he has enough paint. Conditional Converse:

For a Biconditional Statement to be true, BOTH its conditional AND converse must be true Two angles are congruent if and only if their measures are equal. Conditional: If the two angles are congruent, then their measures are equal Converse: If two angle measures are equal, then the angles are congruent. Perry can paint the entire living room if and only if he has enough paint. Conditional Converse: TRUE

Writing Definitions as Biconditionals Polygon: a closed plane figure formed by three or more line segments A figure is a polygon if and only if it is a a plane figure formed by three or more line segments. Triangle: a three-sided polygon
