Luke 19:28-44 28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them,

Luke 19:28-44 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

Luke 19:28-44 32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

Luke 19:28-44 34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

Luke 19:28-44 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

Luke 19:28-44 38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

Luke 19:28-44 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” 40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” 40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

Luke 19:28-44 41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes.

Luke 19:28-44 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.

44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” Luke 19:28-44

WHY THE CHEERING STOPPED

LUKE 19:35-38 They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it. As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives,

LUKE 19:35-38 the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: “ BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! ”

LUKE 19:41-44 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “ If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. “ For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you,

LUKE 19:41-44 and surround you and hem you in on every side, and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. ”

Cheering, praising, exalting… but then something happened. No troops No troops No revolt No revolt Money-changers Money-changers Taxes to Caesar Taxes to Caesar Giving out of poverty Giving out of poverty Giving out of abundance Giving out of abundance Great… must serve Great… must serve Everything they didn ’ t want Everything they didn ’ t want The cheering stopped The cheering stopped

Three Observations

#1 They didn ’ t recognize His purpose They didn ’ t recognize His purpose “ because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. ” “ because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. ”

“visitation” – (episkeptomai) literally meant “to bring relief”.

Same word as Matt. 25:36, “sick and you visited me”.

The reason they couldn’t see Jesus’ purpose was because they had their eyes on their immediate physical circumstances instead of their current spiritual condition.

One prays, “Lord deliver me, help me”… the other prays, “Lord mold me, use me”.

John 16:33 “ These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world. ”

#2 They refused to accept His terms.

Luke 19:42 saying, “ If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. ”

“know” “know” Same usage as Matt. 7:23Same usage as Matt. 7:23 “ Depart from me, I never knew you ”. “ Depart from me, I never knew you ”. “ know ” “ know ” Here means to approve of.Here means to approve of.

They had heard but not approved of or accepted the things Jesus said lead to peace.

Jesus clearly stated His terms: Luke 14 Consideration: Consideration: Count the CostCount the Cost Submission: Submission: Put Him firstPut Him first

People in Jerusalem wanted peace “ through ” conflict. People in Jerusalem wanted peace “ through ” conflict. Jesus offered them peace while they were “ in ” conflict. Jesus offered them peace while they were “ in ” conflict. They rejected His terms. They rejected His terms.

Luke 13:34 “ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!

Dowedothesamething?

#3 They ignored warnings of judgment. They ignored warnings of judgment. Luke 19:42-44 - and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.Luke 19:42-44 - and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.

“ now they have been hidden from your eyes ”.

They knew His claim and His terms…but insisted on doing things their way.

So… the cheering stopped, and they were judged.

Application? You can ’ t approach God on your own terms, only through Jesus. You can ’ t approach God on your own terms, only through Jesus. Don ’ t wait and come to Him when you are good and ready… “ in your own time ”. Don ’ t wait and come to Him when you are good and ready… “ in your own time ”.

John 6:44 – John 6:44 – “ No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; ” “ No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; ” Application?

Believe His claims, Accept His terms, Never lose sight of the reasons you have to cheer in your life!
