Chi-Square The Age vs. Students’ Interest in English Conversation

Goal: This study aims at investigating students’ interest in speaking English at different ages. Research Question: At what ages do the students have more or less interest in English conversation?

…………. 1.In our research, there are 300 participants. Both the male and the female are included in our research.

2. The participants’ age are from 3 years old to 18 years old. The participants of 9 years of age has the most people (48) and the participants of 17 years of age has the fewest people(6).

3. The number of female participants and male participants are the same. That means we have 150 female participants, and we have 150 male participants as well.

4. In our research, we divide the participants into 5 groups by their ages. Group 1 contains the students of age 4 to 6. It takes 24.3 % Group 2 : age 7 to 9 (33.3 %) Group 3: age 10 to 12 (20.0 %) Group 4 : age 13 to 15 (13.0 %) Group 5 : age 16 to 18 (9.3 %) From this table, we can see that Group 2 has the most students (33.3 %), and Group 5 has the fewest students (9.3 %).

gender AGEGROUP GENDER Cross tabulation 5. The table reveals that the participants of age 7 to 9 (Group 2) have the most interest in learning English conversation, and the participants of age 16 to 18 (Group 5) have the least interest in learning it. 6. It also tells us that the children lose their interest in English conversation when they grow older, it is saying that their interest decreases as their ages increase.

AGEGROUP GENDER Cross tabulation 7. From this table, we find that in Group 1,3 and 5, the females are more interested in English conversation than the males. Because the number of female participants is bigger than male’s. However, in Group 2 and 4,we see that the males are more interested in English conversation than females.

8. From the bar plot, it is displayed that the participants of age 9 have the greatest interest in English conversation. Besides, their learning interest is not related with their gender.

9. From this bar plot, we learn that children in Group 2 (the age of 7 to 9 ) have the greatest interests in learning English conversation. However, they become less willing to speak out loud as they are getting older, and this is why the children in Group 5 have the least interest in it.

10. In this bar plot, we first combine all the participants together, and then find that the children of age 9 are most interested in English conversation, too. It clearly shows that the children of age 9 are willing to speak out most.

11. In this bar plot with two categorical variables, it also tells us the fact that children in Group 5 are the least willing to speak out English in front of other people. It may be that the older they are, the shyer they become.

12. The p values are all higher than 0.05, which shows us that they are not statistical significant.

13. From the histogram, we see that the curve line is bell-shaped, so we can say that our research is a normal distribution. 14. Because the children of age 9 have the highest frequency, we can assume that they are willing to learn English conversation and to speak out most. 15. The histogram also shows us that whether children enjoy learning English conversation or not has something to do with their age. The older they are, the more unwilling to speak out they become

Conclusion The earlier the children start having English conversation class the better.

Suggestion If you want to enhance your child’s speaking ability in English, it is suggested that he or she should start learning English as early as possible.

Thank you for your attention!
