3 Background Knowledge Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force In this country, it means England’s control of BurmaBurma This deals with the theme of cultural identity because England tries to impose its cultural identity on another country. Our narrator also feels distant from his cultural identity. He is a police officer in a place far away from home and he tries to assert his authority over a culture that does not respect him.

5 Conflict in “Shooting an Elephant” Man vs. Society Man vs. Self Our narrator does not want to shoot the elephant. The Burmese are very entertained by the idea of our narrator shooting the elephant. Our narrator does not want to shoot the elephant Our narrator feels pressure from the villagers, who normally treat him with disrespect, to shoot the elephant. He wants them to respect him and may shoot the elephant to earn that respect.
