Office of Traffic, Safety, and Technology Manual Layout Notes & Callouts

Office of Traffic, Safety, and Technology Message from Ralph

Office of Traffic, Safety, and Technology MnDOT Technical Experts October 7th 2013 updates The power cables for poles (CCTV or NID) shall be 3/c #14 for distances less than 400 feet and 3/c #8 for longer than 400 feet The use of 334 MP-DET cabinet can be called out for jobs letting after August 2014 (new cabinet that they’ve never had before) The use of service installation type special shall be considered the standard for when we need breakers for devices past the service installation which has a meter Installing a breaker inside of a cabinet like a 334 is a last resort and usually done due to extenuating circumstances

Office of Traffic, Safety, and Technology MnDOT Technical Experts October 7th 2013 updates 50 foot camera poles are the CCTV standard. For shorter than 50 feet use the NID poles and pay items. When using a NID pole and we have the need for loop detection in the area, place a 334Z-08 next to the NID pole. And after August 2014 make it a 334z MP-DET cabinet. Microwave installed on CCTV poles should be no further than 5’ down from the top.

Office of Traffic, Safety, and Technology MnDOT Technical Experts October 7th 2013 updates Microwave Installed on a NID pole should be no further than 8’ down from the top. Do not attempt to run loops out of a pole box Note the offset distance on the plan for NID poles, this requires a field visit.

Office of Traffic, Safety, and Technology MnDOT Technical Experts October 7th 2013 updates If MP or DET cabinet is within 30 feet of the pole you do not need a pole box on the pole, (background, the longest off the shelf microwave cable is 100’. We don’t want to come close to exceeding that distance) Install pull vaults and not hand holes by poles, can be eliminated if splice point and/or power is coming from less than 200 feet away.

Office of Traffic, Safety, and Technology MnDOT Technical Experts October 7th 2013 updates For all ramp control and warning flashers use either 6/c #14 or 3/c #14 for wires. (information for Manual) – Because of LEDs. We are using the Abandon conduits and remove cables call out on a test plan, the use of this needs to be OK’d before it can be used on other plans. Removing all cables and putting in a few new cables is a design discretion item plan by plan.
