3 Reading Class Goals Strengthen reading strategies through the use of short stories, non-fiction materials and poetry. Build confidence by helping students to successfully internalize reading and writing techniques, guiding them to eventual independent use. Enhance vocabulary usage by implementing context clues, study of prefixes & suffixes and encouraging the use of more effective, mature vocabulary through writing. Expand critical thinking skills and creativity through class dialogue, creative writing/reading responses, and group activities.

5 Math Class Goals Strengthen math skills by providing extra practice and support. Utilize helpful strategies for various skills & problem solving. Develop mathematical vocabulary and encourage students to explain their thinking during group discussions. Build Fluency through additional practice and games.

6 Independent Reading It is strongly encouraged that independent reading be promoted at home. Even 20 minutes a day can help your child to become a better reader. Students may choose to read any genre that interests them that is on a level appropriate to their reading ability. Students can log books assigned by their English teacher. Students should read a variety of fiction and non-fiction.

7 For Your Information Students should log their reading each night and parents should initial/sign that their child read.
