4 System Process or How it Works  After food is chewed and swallowed, it goes down the esophagus and enters the stomach, where it is further broken down by powerful stomach acids.  From the stomach the food travels into the small intestine.  Your stomach stretches when you eat like a balloon being filled with air.

5 Any Additional Information  A muscular tube about 10 inches long that connects the pharynx and the stomach.  Food stays in your small intestine for 4 to 8 hours.  The digestive system tube is 20 feet long.
