5 A community of enquiry! Today you are going to be involved in a ‘community of enquiry’ …… You are going to be thinking HARD!!! You may end up in ‘The Pit’…..

6 Remember to… Enquiry Ask questions Say when you are in ‘The Pit’! Listen closely to others Give reasons Agree and disagree Explain your ideas

7 Choosing a question Read the following questions carefully – without talking Alone, decide which one you feel will present the best discussion. – Which one do you have strong views on? – Which one will raise more questions? – Which one will make the class think most? – What are the most important words – why? We will spend a few minutes discussing each question before we vote…

9 Question 2 How do you know which side is ‘right’?

10 Question 3 Is it better to give in and be safe, or to fight and risk losing your life?

11 Question 4 Is it ever right to fight?

12 Question 5 What does it mean to ‘win’ a war?

14 Voting You can vote for 3 questions

15 What do you think? Without talking – spend a few minutes thinking about the question. Explain your first thoughts to your neighbour – 1 minute.

16 Enquiry… We are now going to begin a ‘community of enquiry’. The teacher will ‘facilitate’ the discussion
