2 Selection of Equipment Tennis Rackets Come in 3 different weights: light, medium, and heavy Some are evenly balanced, some are head-heavy, while some are handle heavy Head heavy rackets are preferred by baseline style players, while handle-heavy rackets are used more predominately by net players

3 Selection of Equipment Tennis Rackets (continued) Size of the Grips Look at the circumference usually 4 to 5 inches Also look at the overall length

4 Selection of Equipment Tennis Balls 2 ½ inches in diameter Wool felt covering Some are produced to be court specific Hard courts (asphalt or cement) Soft courts (clay or grass)

5 Suggested Learning Sequence Safety on and around the court Basic racket skills Grips Strokes Forehand, Backhand, Service, and Return of Service Rules and Etiquette

6 Safety on and around the court Warm up before starting play If injured, stop and report the injury to your teacher Remove rings, bracelets, watches, and other that might cause bruises or cuts Check the playing surface for glass, nails, stones, slippery spots and so forth Stay in line, on mark, or in your own area when swinging or hitting. Control your emotions – do not throw the racket or hit a ball in anger

7 Safety on and around the court (continued) Shout a warning when there is danger of a ball hitting someone Avoid showing off and “horseplay” Don’t hit each other with rackets Don’t try and jump the net Be aware of the distances between the baselines and walls, fences, screens, and so on. When playing in excessive heat, make sure to drink plenty of fluids.

10 Rules and Etiquette If one of your tennis balls rolls into another court, wait until the players on the court have finished their rally before asking for your ball. When you return someone's ball that has rolled into your court,roll the ball back to the player asking for it instead of trying to get some stroking practice. If they are engaged in playing a point, roll the ball back against the screen out of their field of play. If your opponent is interfered with in any way during the play for a point, stop the play, call a "let," and then play the point over.

11 Rules and Etiquette (continued) You call lines on your side of the net and let your opponent call lines on her side. When leaving or entering courts, do not walk behind a player playing a point. Wait until the rally is over, then quickly cross the rear of the court close to the back screen.
