2 A. Physical Properties  1. Physical properties are any characteristics that can be observed without changing the identity of the material.  2. Physical properties remain constant, you can use your observations or measurements of these properties to identify substances.  3. You can use your senses to observe some of the basic physical properties of a substance.

3 A. Physical Properties  4. Examples include color, size, shape, odor, texture, density, melting point, and boiling point.  a. You can determine the color, mass, and shape of a ball without changing the substance that makes up the ball.

5 A. Physical Properties  6. Other properties that can be measured includes strength, hardness, ductility, malleable, viscosity, and magnetism.  a. Ductile: ability to draw a material into a wire  b. Malleable: can be hammered into thin sheets  c. Viscosity: tendency of a liquid to keep from flowing or the resistance of flowing; the greater the viscosity the slower it will move

7 B. Chemical Properties  1. Some elements react very easily with other elements.  2. A chemical property describes how a substance changes into a new substance, either by combining with other elements or by breaking apart into new substances.
