 The Name of Jesus

Origin Phil. 2 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped “Being” NIV = Hyparchon’ Present participle=What He was then He continues to be now Phil. 2:6

7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. Made himself nothing = Ekenosen Emptied himself. Let go of something=> Not Grasped Phil. 2:7

Form = Schema’ Outward appearance that can change Phil. 2:7

Athanatian Creed ‪ ‪ Now this is the true faith: That we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, is both God and human, equally. He is God from the essence of the Father, begotten before time; and he is human from the essence of his mother, born in time; completely God, completely human, with a rational soul and human flesh; equal to the Father as regards divinity, less than the Father as regards humanity. Although he is God and human, yet Christ is not two, but one. He is one, however, not by his divinity being turned into flesh, but by God's taking humanity to himself.

8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Found in human form = The “Mere man” that people saw when they looked at Jesus. Phil. 2:8

8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Phil. 2:8

8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Phil. 2:8

The Crucifixion was… “a death not allowed for Roman citizens and to Jews indicative of the curse of God.” Crucifixion

Deut. 21 22 "And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance. Crucifixion

Gal. 3 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us--for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree" -- Crucifixion

What Jesus experiences on the cross in his relationship with God:  separation from God  the wrath of God  the judgment of God

“ The holy God makes himself the object of his own wrath in the person of his son. ” --Donald Bloesch

First veiled, humbled, and obedient, disgraced, judged. Now exalted.

Name above all names Phil. 2 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
