2. Background Info The surfboard was believed to have originated in Polynesia around A.D. 400. In later years, it was believed that the Polynesians brought the sport with them to Hawaii. The first surfboards were made from various trees on the island, and were shaped by hand. They were then stained and finished using oils from plants
