The Practice of Connected Teaching In connected teaching, classroom educators are fully instrumented, with 24/7 access to data about student learning and analytic tools that help them act on the insights the data provide. They are connected to their students and to professional content, resources, and systems that empower them to create, manage, and assess engaging and relevant learning experiences for students both in and out of school. They also are connected to resources and expertise that improve their own instructional practices, continually add to their competencies and expertise, and guide them in becoming facilitators and collaborators in their students’ increasingly self-directed learning (Figure 3). Like students in the learning model described earlier, teachers engage in personal learning networks that support their own learning and their ability to serve their students well. ~ US Department of Education (November 2010)

Content Knowledge Common Core Standards, for better or for worse Reading: – Key Ideas and Details – Craft and Structure – Integration of Knowledge and Ideas Writing – Text Types (Narrative, Informational, Argumentative) – Production and Distribution of Writing – Research to Build and Present Knowledge

Tipping Points: Literacy and Technology The myth of the “digital native” Yes, we can txt and Facebook… Digital immigrants have skills, too How content -- canonical, contemporary, and user-created -- is produced, consumed, and distributed for teaching and learning Mobile learning in and out of school Open courseware, hybrid learning Who controls the ways you access the internet Facebook vs. Google vs. Everyone else Broadband and wifi access

We are at a tipping point Malcolm Gladwell argues that… “The success of any kind of social epidemic is heavily dependent on the involvement of people with a particular and rare set of social gifts.” (p. 33)

When you return to your classroom… who will you be? A.A “connector,” who make friends easily and brings the world together B.A “maven,” who connects others with new information C.A “salesman,” who persuades others D.A teacher leader who does all this, and so much more
