1 Absolute Value I’m absolutely positive! Even when I’m negative
Defining Success Absolute Value I’m absolutely positive! Even when I’m negative Defining success Absolute Value I’m absolutely positive! Even when I’m negative

2 In this lesson you will…
Be able to identify the absolute value of integers as their distance from zero Interpret absolute value as magnitude for positive and negative quantities in real-world scenarios Distinguish statements about absolute value from statements about order In this lesson you will: Be able to identify the absolute value of integers as their distance from zero Interpret absolute value as magnitude for positive and negative quantities in real-world scenarios Distinguish statements about absolute value from statements about order 6.NS.7

3 By the end of this lesson you will be able to solve problems such as…
John, Jeff, and Jude were looking at their bank accounts. John’s account has a balance of -$13.45, Jeff has a balance of -$31.45, and Jude has a balance of $ Who has the most amount of money? Who has the least amount of money? By the end of this lesson you will be able to solve problems such as: John, Jeff, and Jude were looking at their bank accounts. John’s account has a balance of -$13.45, Jeff has a balance of -$31.45, and Jude has a balance of $ Who has the most amount of money? Who has the least amount of money? In previous lessons, we have used a number line to compare integers. Since John and Jeff have a negative account balance, their balances will be plotted to the left of zero on the number line. Jude has a positive account balance so his balance will be plotted to the right of zero on the number line. Looking at the number line, we can see that Jeff has the least amount of money and Jude has the most amount of money.

4 By the end of this lesson you will be able to solve problems such as…
John, Jeff, and Jude were looking at their bank accounts. John’s account has a balance of -$13.45, Jeff has a balance of -$31.45 and Jude has a balance of $ Who has the most amount of money? Who has the least amount of money? You can also use absolute value to solve a problem like this. We can see the absolute value of John’s account represents a debt of $13.45, the absolute value of Jeff’s account represents a debt of $31.45, and the absolute value of Jude’s account represents a balance of $ Using absolute values, one can see that Jeff has the least amount of money and Jude has the most amount of money.
