2 + Content Area: Social Studies Grade Level: K Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is to highlight Tennessee’s state symbols and America’s national symbols in a way that is both educational and interactive. Learning objective: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to name and identify the state of Tennessee’s symbols and also national symbols with 100% accuracy. TN Common core standard: K.16 Identify the following state and national symbols: -The American flag and its colors and shapes - The Tennessee flag and its colors and shapes - The words of the Pledge of Allegiance - The Tennessee state flower (Iris) and bird (Mockingbird) - The national symbols of the bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, and the White House

4 + The American Flag “White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valor, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice". -Charles Thompson (secretary to the Continental Congress) The thirteen stripes represent the thirteen colonies and the fifty stars represent the fifty states of America.

5 + The Tennessee Flag The three stars: the three divisions of the state (East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, West Tennessee) The blue circle around the stars: the unity of the three different divisions of the state. The blue line on the right of the flag has no significance; it is strictly for design.
