3 Vocabulary Accumulates: collects, builds up Acquisition: a gain; something bought or received Appropriate: suitable/fitting for a particular person, place, or situation

8 Utopia Project Due Wednesday, February 1 st You have been hired to plan and create a Utopian Society. Your assignment is to create a product that will inform people about your community and encourage them to live in your society.

9 Options You must choose one of the following formats for your product: Billboard (poster) Brochure Powerpoint Prezi

10 Requirements Each option must have the following sections: 1 – Title and Logo – create a name and logo for your community. Make sure it is catchy and appealing 2 – Government – Have a section that describes the type of government in your society and include how the government officials are chosen

11 Requirements cont. Each option must have the following sections: 3 – Pictures of the Society – you must have at least three pictures of your society or parts of your society. For example: map of the layout, picture of the government building, what the houses people live in look like, the school, a park, any type of entertainment

12 Requirements cont. Each option must have the following sections: 4 – Recreation – What do people do for fun? How do they spend their days? 5 – Jobs – what do people do for money? Do people choose their jobs or are they assigned?

13 Requirements cont. 6 – Family Life – How do families live? What do their homes look like? How many people in each family? 7 – Rules and Consequences – List at least five rules for your society and the consequences of breaking the rules.

14 Requirements cont. MOST IMPORTANTLY… What makes your society perfect? Why is your society better than the others? Why should people live here? You want to encourage people to come live in your community.

15 The Giver Jonas’s world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it’s time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back. Lois Lowry

16 Chapters 1-3 – How do you feel about the aging ceremony? – Are you comfortable with the idea of children being given to parents? – Do you think that they have a good way of keeping everyone equal?

17 – How do you feel about the “family units”? Do you think that they would work in our world today? Do you like the idea of the units? – Do you have any questions about the novel so far?

18 Chapters 4-6 –W–What do you think about not choosing your spouse? –H–How do you feel about not having control over what children you have?

19 –D–Does it sit well with you that you cannot choose your own job? –D–Do you think that the plans they have in their community would work for our world today? –A–Any questions you have for me?

20 Chapters 7-9 –H–How do you think that you would feel if you were in Jonas’s shoes? –W–Would you be willing to take on the great responsibility that is asked of him?

21 –D–Do you feel the same way Jonas does about asking liars if they lie? –W–Would you take advantage of the new rights that he was given? –D–Do you have any predictions of what you think might happen in the next three chapters?

22 Writing Activity Describe something like you are seeing it for the very first time. Use your five senses to describe what you see, hear, feel, touch, and smell. It can be about ANYTHING so use your imagination!!!!!

23 Chapters 10-12 –H–How do you feel about the idea of Sameness? Do you think that it could work in our world today? –H–How do you think you would react to seeing color for the first time?

24 – How do you think you would feel if you didn’t know what snow was and was first introduced to it? – What do you think about the idea of genetic scientists making everyone the same? – Do these chapters bring on any new questions or predictions of what is to come?

25 Research Activity Jonas’s Community talks a lot about Sameness. In order to achieve this, there had to be some form of Survival of the Fittest. Do a little bit of research to find out what Survival of the Fittest is. –D–Do you think that this is what was used to create Sameness? –D–Do you think that this would work in society today? –W–What, if any, problems do you see with this thought plan?

27 Chapters 13-15 –D–Did you find yourself sharing the same frustrations as Jonas? –H–How would you have reacted to sharing a memory with Gabe? –D–Do you think you would have been able to handle the pain of war?

28 –D–Do you agree that it is safer not to make your own decisions? –D–Do you feel that Jonas will be able to continue his training to become the Receiver? –D–Do you have any thoughts about how they go about twins in the Community? Could you make the decision that Jonas’s dad made?

29 Chapters 16-18 – Can you imagine not knowing what love and grandparents were? – What do you think Jonas means when he says that love is dangerous? – How do you feel about Jonas’s parents telling him that love is meaningless? Do you agree with that statement?

30 – What do you think about Jonas becoming able to lie? Do you notice his growth? – How would you react to feeling lonely? – How do you feel about Rosemary’s incident? – “Memories are forever” What does this statement mean to you?

31 Chapters 19-21 –W–What were your reactions to finding out what the Release Ceremony really was? How does this make you feel? –I–Is it safe to say that this was Jonas’s breaking point?

32 – Do you think that the plan will work? – Do you think that Jonas had a point when he said that everyone should have to share the memories? – How did you feel about finding out that Rosemary was The Giver’s daughter?

33 – Would you have taken Gabe as well? – Do you think Jonas used his training properly to help save them both from the search planes?

34 Chapters 22 & 23 –W–What were your thoughts on the ending? Do you think they made it? –H–How would you have dealt with the cold? –W–Would you recommend this book to other people in your grade?

35 Objectives The students will read the book and be able to effectively comprehend it. The students will be able to answer all the questions with deeper knowledge then before. The students will participate in the classroom discussions by means of group conversations and project. The students will be more active with the novel with the power point that without it.

36 Audience This power point was made for seventh grade students This is for English class There is also a science lesson mixed in with the English lesson
