3. Christopher Columbus Born in 1451 in Italy (like Marco Polo) Was fascinated by stories of Marco Polo’s travels Curious about the wealth of Asia

4. Who will support me? -In order for him to complete his explorations, he needed funding -Asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, said no at first, but then agreed (Wanted wealth, new land and to spread Catholic faith)

5. Finally his exploration begins… -Traveled with 3 ships: the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria -89 men joined him -Hard journey, many of the crew wanted to turn back

6. Where did his travels take him? Thought he could go West to Asia instead of going around Africa

7. They find land -Finally found land with people who lived there (Tainos) -Named this San Salvador -Claimed the land for the King and Queen -Thought he was in Asia, but really it was America -Wanted to be friendly to the natives because he wanted to convert them to Christian faith -Natives are friendly to them and give them everything they have which was not a lot

8. The End Died in 1506 at the age of 54 Heart attack When he died, he still didn’t know he had landed in America and not Asia
