PrayerSongs Bible study Lord’s Supper SongContributionAnnouncementsPrayer So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. Now the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly and sinners against the Lord. Genesis 13:11-13

Lessons on home and family

Lot’s impact upon his family 13 and 19

Who was Lot? He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men ( for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds ), 2 Peter 2:7-8 We might conclude that such a righteous man would have a positive impact upon his family

Jonadab and Rechab’s impact upon their family 5 Then I set before the men of the house of the Rechabites pitchers full of wine and cups ; and I said to them, " Drink wine !" 6 But they said, " We will not drink wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ' You shall not drink wine, you or your sons, forever. 7 ' You shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed and you shall not plant a vineyard or own one ; but in tents you shall dwell all your days, that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.' 8 " We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons or our daughters, 9 nor to build ourselves houses to dwell in ; and we do not have vineyard or field or seed. 10 " We have only dwelt in tents, and have obeyed and have done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. Jeremiah 35:5-10

13:1-10 Abram’s offer Strife between herdsmen of Lot and Abram cause a generous offer by Abram and a friendly separation

13:11-13 Lot’s decision  Lot selects the valley of the Jordan  Moves away from the godly influence of Abram  Ignores the well-known evil reputation of Sodom 13:13; 2 Pet. 2:7-8

19:1-38 Lot’s impact upon his family  He offers his daughters to be abused by perverted men, vs 8  He loses his sons-in-law and wife, vss 14, 26  He allows himself to become drunk and fathers children by his two daughters, vss 30-38

Practical lessons from the story Righteous husbands and fathers make mistakes: never over-estimate yourself Beware of decisions based solely upon material considerations Decisions have long-term unforeseen consequences Moving away from godly influences of family and Christians can be a mistake
