4 What is a social issue? O A social issue (also called a social problem or a social illness or even a social conflict) refers to an issue that influences and is opposed by a considerable number of individuals within a society.

5 Most Common Social Problems O Brainstorming! O Let’s make a list of all the social problems that we know O Write them on the board.

6 O Personal problem VS public problem Personal problems are things that affect individuals and those around them. If someone in a family attempts suicide, that is a problem for the family Public issues, on the other hand, involve much larger numbers of people. For an issue to become a social concern, it needs to have an influential group define it as so. An influential group is a group that can have a significant impact on public debate and social policy. Ex: MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers)

7 O Social issues are those which affect the human society as a whole. These issues pertain to human behavior, including government policies, religious conflicts, gender inequalities, economic disparities, etc.

10 Social Power O Who in our society has power? O Who has priority? Provide an example. O Who creates rules and who directs them? O Do all citizen obey the rules? O What happens if someone disobey?

12 The importance of being important O In a society, social power seems to have an importance. O Defined as being able to influence or control the behavior of people. O People who have more social status tend to have more privileges. O They have better jobs, better positions, better opportunities. O Who do you think has social power?
