1 Setting Goals! By: Mrs. Irvin

2 “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much!” Jim Rohn, American entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker

3 Purpose of this Lesson:
To help you get excited about your future and Understand that goals will help you live a happier, healthier, & potentially wealthier life!

4 What is a goal? A GOAL is a well-defined target that gives you clarity, direction, motivation, and focus. Only 5%-10% of people think about goals on a regular basis! Only 1%-3% have clear written goals!

5 Why bother? Goals provide a way to focus, concentrate, and spend your time and energy on carefully chosen targets that are designed to make positive impacts on your life!

6 Purpose of setting goals
Goals help you: Make a positive change in your life Form a new habit or change an existing habit Improve or develop a skill, talent, or ability Realize a dream or other important outcome Improve your performance on a task or activity

7 Short-term Goals Examples: I will get an ‘A’ on tomorrow’s math test.
I will finish all of my homework every night this week. I will smile at someone I don’t know every day this week. I will write down assignments for every class this week. I will only say positive things this week (no gossip!) I will read at least 20 minutes per day for fun. I will sleep for at least 8 hours each night.

8 Long-term Goals Examples: I will get all A’s and B’s this year.
I will workout at least 3 times per week. I will make responsible decisions. I will be prepared for my classes all year long. I will graduate from high school on time. I will go to college/CTC/military, etc. I will get up as soon as my alarm clock rings for the entire school year.

9 Short Term & Long Term Goals
It is important to have both in life! For this class, you’ll choose 2 different goals (academic & personal) that you’d like to achieve by the end of MP1. The goals you set will change over time…

10 Guess The Celebrity Who Am I?
Grew up in in poverty in rural Mississippi to two teenage parents Was molested as a young girl and turned to drugs and alcohol for comfort Made a decision to get sober and landed a job as a reporter with a local TV station Now the richest and most powerful woman in television I was cut from my high school basketball team. I was so upset that I went home, locked myself in my room, and cried.

11 In order for something to be a goal:
It has to be important to you! It has to be within your power to make it happen through your own actions. It must be clearly defined. It must have a specific plan of action. It has to be realistic & something you have a reasonable chance of achieving.

12 SMART GOALS S: Specific M: Measurable & Motivational A: Achievable
R: Realistic T: Timely & Trackable

13 Imagine your goals… Close your
Think about a goal you would like to achieve by Nov. 2nd What is it you would like to achieve? What do you need to do to make it happen? Can you make it happen by the end of MP1? Will anything get in your way? If so, how you can you overcome that obstacle? Will you tell anyone about it? Open your eyes and let’s get started!

18 R: Realistic Is it possible to achieve your goal by Nov 4?
Ex. My goal is to get a B or better on every Math Quiz Possible Obstacles: Too busy to study Forgetting to take my math book home Embarrassed to raise my hand and ask for help Ways to Overcome: Manage time better Write what I need to take home in my planner and check it at the end of the day Ask teacher to call on me Take a minute to complete this section of your worksheet

19 T: Timely & Trackable Use the calendar on the back of this worksheet to keep track of your progress. Examples: Each day, write yes/no or the time spent on the goal Keep track of whatever you need to document your progress toward the goal. Be Creative with this part! Ask me or Mrs. Phelps for help if you’re not sure what you want to do!

20 Reaching Your Goal Monitor your progress and hold yourself accountable if you lose motivation. Don’t forget to reward yourself when you start making progress!

21 Don’t Give Up – Stay Motivated!
It is estimated that Thomas Edison failed over 1,000 times before he finally discovered a way to make the light bulb work. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps." It is very rare for something important to be accomplished successfully on the first try. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps."
