2 Independent Writing Guided Writing Investigations
The purpose of the writing workshop is to give students opportunities to write within the school day and to provide appropriate, intensive, targeted instruction to the whole group, small groups, and individuals. This is done in 3 instructional contexts: Independent Writing Guided Writing Investigations

3 The Basic Structure for Independent Writing:
Writer’s Talk [optional] min Minilesson min Status of the Class [optional] 2 min Writing [notebook or project Conferring] min Group Share and Evaluation min

4 The Writing Process (different from what we are used to)
Explore Notice events, people, and objects around you Probe experiences for ideas Record thoughts, observations through writing and sketching Read, listen, and engage in exploratory research Reflect to shape thoughts Discover interest, focus and purpose

5 Draft Commit to a writing project-tentative audience and genre
Tentatively plan writing Write discovery draft (Draft #1) and successive drafts to final draft Revise, select from, or expand discovery dragt Focus on voice Develop ideas and attend to text organization Attend to sentence variety and word choice Work on beginnings, details, language flow and endings

6 Edit Proofread and edit for conventions – grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation Or what I call GUMS errors – grammar, usage, mechanics and spelling Complete final copy Publish Conduct final, formal editing Produce published piece with final layout, illustrations, graphics (as appropriate)

7 Creating an Environment to Support Good Writing
Students need to be comfortable Students need an array of materials available to them Students need a writing folder to keep current and finished projects in Text resources such as dictionaries and thesauruses

8 Minilessons A minilesson is a short lesson focused on a specific principle or procedure Teaches something important about writing and demonstrates an aspect of the writing process Cannot be all telling… needs interaction and contributions from students

9 Types of Minilessons Management minilessons help students learn the routines and procedures of writing workshop Strategy and skill minilessons help students learn how to use the conventional rules for written language accurately and effectively Craft minilessons shoe students how writers work

11 Building a Community in the Classroom…
This is based on a number of principles where all members… Are trusted with rights and responsibilities Take responsibility for their own learning and helping others Take responsibility for managing time and activity productivity Learn self-management as part of the curriculum delivered by the teacher Understand that keeping materials in order helps everyone learn

The two aspects of the environment focused on in this chapter are: Physical Environment How space and materials are organized Social Environment How people behave in the environment

13 Managing Time You should try to find three blocks of time for language/word study, reading, and writing. Language/word study should be approximately 30 minutes Reading and writing workshop should fall between 45 minutes to an hour

14 Some Other General Principles for Using Time…
Establish a productive and easy-to-accomplish task that students perform every morning as they enter the classroom Find ways to take care of routine business efficiently Vary the schedule across the week Post the schedule each morning and briefly review it with students Establish routines that will save time
