“An empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real life context; when the boundaries between phenomenon and context are not clearly evident; and in which multiple sources of evidence are used’ ( Yin, 1984) “It tires to illuminate a decision or set of decision: why they were taken, how they were implemented, and with what result.” (Shramm, 1971)

Features: Uses multiple sources of evidence “Real life” context Empirical Progress, change or event Focus on competitive environment and strategic operational changes

Yin (1981): Exploratory Explanatory Descriptive Stake (1995): Intrinsic Instrumental Collective Thatcher (2006) Causal Interpretive Normative

Assessing research strategies: a) The type of research question posed b) The extent of control an investigator has over the actual behavioral events c) Degree of focus on contemporary as opposed to historical events

Single-Case vs. Multiple-Case Single-case studies are also ideal for revelatory cases where an observer may have access to a phenomenon that was previously inaccessible. Multiple-case studies follow a replication logic.

Literal vs. Theoretical considerations Design framework needs to state the conditions under which a particular phenomenon is likely to be found (literal replication) as well as the conditions when it is not likely to be found (theoretical replication).

Criticisms: According to Hoaglin, Light, McPeek, Mosteller and Stoto, the problem with case research is that, “most people feel that they can prepare a case study, and nearly all of us believe we can understand one”. 1.Validity 2.Construct validity 3.Internal validity 4.Reliability
