Drill #17 Find the value of the following if f(x) = 1. f( 2 ) 2. f( ½ ) 3.f(-1) 4.f(3a)

2-2 Linear Equations Objective: To identify equations that are linear and graph them, to write linear equations in standard form, and to determine the x- and y- intercepts of a line and use them to graph an equation.

Linear Equation ** 1.linear equation: An equation containing one or two variables with no variable having an exponent other than 1. Examples: 3x + 2y = 10 x = 4 y = -1 y = 2x + 1

Standard Form* Standard Form of a Linear Equation: Ax + By = C Where A, B, and C are integers, and A and B are not both zero.

Examples* Linear EquationsNon-Linear Equations

Writing Equations in Standard Form* Steps for writing equations in Standard Form: 1.Group all variables on the left side of the equation, and all constants on the right. 2.Simplify all fractions by multiplying each term by the LCM of all the denominators. 3.Find common factors of A, B, and C. If there are any divide each term by the common factor. Answer should be in the form: Ax + By = C

Writing Equations in Standard Form* Write each equation in Standard Form where A, B, and C are integers whose greatest common factor is 1. Identify A, B, and C. Ex1:y = -5x + 6 Ex 2: ¾ x = 2y + 5 Ex3:5x – 10y = 25.

Classwork 2-2 Study Guide #1 – 5

x and y intercepts ** 2. x – intercept: the x-coordinate of the point where the graph of a function crosses the x- axis. NOTE: y = 0 at the intercept. 3. y – intercept: the y-coordinate of the point where the graph of a function crosses the y- axis. NOTE: x = 0 at the intercept.

Finding the X- and Y- Intercepts* To find the x- intercept: 1. Substitute y = 0 into the equation. 2. Solve the equation (for x) 3. The solution is where the line crosses the x-axis. To find the y- intercept: 1. Substitute x = 0 into the equation. 2. Solve the equation (for y) 3. The solution is where the line crosses the y-axis.

Finding the x-and y- intercepts* Ex1:3x + 2y = 8 Ex2:¾ x + ½ y = 3

Classwork 2-2 Practice #5, 6

Graphing Equations in Standard Form* Steps for graphing equations in Standard Form: 1. Find the x- and y- intercepts. 2. Plot each intercept on the coordinate plane. 3. Draw a line through the two points. (All lines should have arrowheads!)

Classwork 2-2 Practice #9, 10 Homework: 2-2 Study Guide/Practice (ALL)
