3 Netiquette- proper manners when conversing on the world-wide web with others. Do’s Identify yourself in e-mails Choose an appropriate e- mail address. Spell check e-mails Use appropriate language Don’ts Don’t accept friend requests from those you do not know. Don’t use all capital letters in posts (seems like you are shouting).

4 Copyright and Fair Use Copyright- legal device that provides the creator the chance to decide how his or work can be used. Example: poem, book, music, etc. Fair Use- the right for others to use copyrighted material legally.

5 Fair Use Guidelines Photographs- you can use one no more than five by the same author. Music- use only 10% of a song or musical work Poem- less than 250 words Articles, stories, or essays less than 2,500 words Books- 2 pages from a picture book with less than 2, 500 words. 6 Plagiarism Using someone else’s work without giving them credit.

7 Plagiarism How to avoid plagiarism: a)Put everything in quotation marks that comes directly from the text. b)Paraphrase c)Cite sources

8 Ways that technology helps teachers recognize and stop plagiarism: Google the phrase being used Use sites such as Turnitin – determine if the work being presented is original Purdue OWL- provides assistance for the writing process Define plagiarism for students

9 Safety on the Internet Identify theft- do not give out personal information: name, phone number, address, or social security number. Cyber bullying- someone is threatened or humiliated by another on the internet. 10 Safety on your Computer Phishing: a)Do not open e-mails from unknown senders b)Do not respond to e-mails that asks for personal information Virus- self-replicating program that spreads throughout the computer. a)Make sure your computer has a virus protection: Norton Anti-virus b)aware of allowing pop-ups c)Do not open spam

11 Safety on the Computer cont’d. Worms- replicate rapidly and it contains codes that will erase files from your computer. Trojan horses- are imposters (pretend to be something else on your computer). a)Make sure your virus protection is up to date b)Scan your computer regularly
