1 What is HMI today? Doug Patton Chief Technology Officer,
DENSO International America, Inc.

2 DENSO as a Systems Provider
Powertrain Control System Engine management system, Gasoline direct injection, Hybrid components, Starter, Alternator, etc. Thermal Systems Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), Compressor, Heat exchangers, Battery thermal management, etc. Information & Communications Systems Instrument cluster, Head-up display, Human machine interface technologies, Horn, Keyless entry, Wireless phone charger, etc. Driving Control & Safety Systems Passive safety technologies, Airbag sensing system, Active safety technologies, Traction control system, Antilock braking system, etc.

4 NHTSA Automated Driving Definition
NHTSA DEFINES VEHICLE AUTOMATION AS HAVING FIVE LEVELS LEVEL 0 No automation Driver is in complete and sole control of brakes, steering, throttle, and motive power at all times. LEVEL 1 Function-specific automation Automation of one or more functions: electronic stability control or pre-charged brakes. LEVEL 2 Combined function automation Automation of at least two functions, for example adaptive cruise control and lane centering steering. LEVEL 3 Limited self-driving automation automation that takes over all safety-critical functions under certain traffic conditions. Driver is available for occasional control. LEVEL 4 Full self-driving automation Vehicle can perform all safety-critical driving functions for an entire trip. Driver is not expected to be available for control at anytime during the trip.

5 HMI – A critical Part of Driving

6 Where are We Today?

7 North America HMI R&D and Activity
Consortium GOAL: To establish a common methodology to measure driver workload/attention Attention Workload Doug said you need to mention an A to B comparison

8 Have We Gone Too Far?

9 [ ] What is HMI ? In the future: Automated Driving
Tomorrow: Drive in the loop Today’s Issues: Driver Workload

10 Full Autonomous Vehicle: When and How?
OEM timing for Level 5: Full AV When: OEMs have various timing for fully autonomous vehicles Issues to resolve : Regulations, Infrastructure, Cyber Security Group 4 No AV Program Group 1 By 2020 How: Industry wide collaboration to resolve Level 3 & 4 needed for transition to Full AV (Driver in the Loop - HMI) Need holistic approach Group 2 2020 + Group 3 No Info

11 HUD Display Information
HUD will assist in Driver Notification/Operation Head-up Display To safely provide the right information at the right time and in the right location.

12 Driver in the Loop Vehicle moving OUT of AV mode
Vehicle moving into Automated Vehicle mode Vehicle moving OUT of AV mode Manual Control Driver IN the Loop

13 Industry PARTNERSHIPS Academia Automakers Government Collaboration
Collaboration between Industry, Academia and Government is required for successful Full Autonomous Vehicle implementation through common issue resolution. Industry Automakers PARTNERSHIPS Suppliers BUSINESSES Government Academia

14 Thank You Thank you very much.
