5 Basic Principles of Buddhism Suffering is a part of life Two reasons people suffer is that they are too attached to material possessions and selfish ideas By living in wise, moral, and thoughtful way, people can eventually learn to escape suffering There are lots of different Buddhist sects or groups

6 Pure Land Buddhism Pure Land Buddhism: Does not require any special rituals (popular with common people) Followers chant the Buddha’s name over and over to achieve an enlightened state

7 Zen Buddhism Emphasizes self-discipline, simplicity and meditation (quiet thinking) rituals Zen means meditation Quiet reflection and inner peace are important parts of Zen Buddhism Samurai believed Zen Buddhism would bring them inner peace and help them in battle
