Looking For A Solution Izamar Espinoza English 2010

My Topic I decided to research the topic of immigration because it’s a topic that concerns not only me but others. Because we all live in the United States and we all should care about the problems the United States has. My thesis is that in order to help fix the problem the United States has with illegal immigration action needs to be taken.

The Problem I discovered in a scholarly journal written by Guadalupe Correa Cabrera titled The Mathematics of Mexico – U.S. migration and U.S. Immigration Policy, “That according to the American Community Survey, in 2010 the number of immigrants in this country was approximately 40 million.” (Cabrera 1) In order to minimize the number of illegal immigrants, something must be done. Like I mentioned in my thesis action needs to be taken.

Has Action been taken ? In August 1, 2001 the D.R.E.A.M. Act was introduced. Which stands for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors. It was a legislative proposal that would have provided conditional residency to certain immigrants of good character who graduated from high schools, and arrived to the U.S. as minors. If the illegal immigrants were to complete two years in the military or two years at four year college, the illegal immigrants would obtain temporary residency for a six year period.

The D.R.E.A.M. Act If within the six years the illegal immigrants obtained a degree from an institution of higher education or have completed at least two years in good standing, in a program for a bachelors degree or higher degree in the United States or served in the armed forces for at least two years and if discharged undocumented immigrants must receive an honorable discharge. The D.R.E.A.M. Act would have offered a path to legalization to 2 million young undocumented immigrants..

Professor Kevin R. Johnson says in his scholarly journal “ Unfortunately, there is a long history of state and local laws that discriminate against immigrants through facially neutral means. (Johnson, 618) The D.R.E.A.M Act didn’t get passed.

Immigration Reform An other attempt the U.S. has made to solve the current problem with illegal immigration would be the immigration reform.

Immigration Reform Thomas J. Donohue president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in an article published in Corridor Business Journal titled Immigration Reform Needed said “ We need immigration reform to remain a nation ruled by law, guided by principle, and driven by compassion and common sense. We need to prove that America can tackle big challenges and that our leaders can come together and act for the good of our economy, our people, and our future.” (Donohue1)

Immigration Reform The immigration reform offers a path to legalization, if the illegal immigrants meets certain requirements. The requirements are that the illegal immigrants must pay penalties for missed taxes, learn how to speak English, must pass a background check, and well need to establish residency in the United States. The immigration reform has not passed.

The President According to the U.S. News Digital Weekly article titled Obama Goes It Alone Again written by Lauren Fox, Obama said “ Today, I’m beginning a new effort to fix as much of the immigration system as I can on my own. Obama said.” (Fox 1) And he has President Obama offered young immigrants that would have qualified for the D.R.E.A.M. Act, Deferred Action which is a two year stay in the United States without being deported.

The President In an article published in the Bloomberg Business Week titled Obama Goes It Alone On Immigration written by Josh Eidelson says “More than 550,000 young immigrants have qualified for deferred action.” (Eidelson 1). Imagine how many more illegal immigrants would benefit from the immigration reform. Less families would be separated because of deportation. Less people feeling uncertainty and discrimination. And more people working hard and helping build a better nation.

In Conclusion In conclusion as much as the President does he can’t do much without the support of congress. Like my thesis says there is a need to act to act to solve the problem with immigration laws in the United States. We need to put people in congress that see these problems and want to solve them to act as well. Someone that wants to find a solution. Not someone who just sees the problem and ignores the problem.

Reflective Statement I liked being able to present my research my analysis. Because that helped my recap everything I have learned throughout the process and how my thoughts and opinions changed throughout the whole process. I like that opportunity to publically communicate and do present my information. And of course being able to learn from others and their own process. Because I’m learning from them and they are will learn from me as well. I also liked being able to do a multimedia project, because I love using pictures and backgrounds to show my information my knowledge and learning process.
