2 First, let’s remember what a NOUN is. A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.

3 What is a possessive noun? Possessives show ownership. They show something belongs to someone or something. In other words, they “possess” something. For example, if we want to show that a book belongs to the boy, it would be stated:

4 More Examples: the dog’s bone If you wanted to say the coat belongs to the girl… The girl’s coat If you wanted to say that the bone belongs to the dog…

5 More Examples: If you wanted to say the pencil belongs to the teacher the teacher’s pencil If you wanted to say the jump ropes belong to the students the students’ jump ropes

6 How do you make a noun possessive? There are 3 rules to make a noun possessive.

7 Rule 1 If you want to make a SINGULAR NOUN possessive: add an apostrophe and an s (‘s) For example, if the singular noun “cat” has a brush, the possessive form is: the cat’s brush

8 For Example: The lady owns the shoe. the lady’s shoe Frank owns the boat. Frank’s boat

9 Rule 2 If you want to make a PLURAL NOUN that ends in s possessive, just add an apostrophe ( ‘ ) For example: if the three girls own a playhouse the possessive form is: the three girls’ playhouse

10 For example: three ladies own the business the ladies’ business the students own the computer the students’ computer

11 Rule 3 For a PLURAL NOUN that does not end in s, add an apostrophe and an s - (‘s) For example, if the cheese belongs to the mice, then the possessive form is: the mice’s cheese

12 For Example: The basketball belongs to the children The children’s basketball The gloves belong to the women The women’s gloves
