1 Measurable Milestones END-PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The bed monitor system helps prevent injury by predicting when an individual is attempting to leave the bed unassisted. In order to eliminate false alarms, the system will be capable of distinguishing between individual’s activities such as rolling over, sitting up, or leaving the bed. It will not interfere with hospital equipment while communicating to a central station the status of each bed monitored. A set of sensors is installed on each bed to collect data. A prediction algorithm processes the data and proper notification is transmitted to the monitoring station. TESTING APPROACH Component Testing: Ensure functional performance of components System Integration Testing: Ensure components are compatible User Testing: Use third parties to check system performance & comfort Software Testing: Ensure validity of I/O interfacing and algorithms Failure Testing: Expose system to potential failure conditions BUDGET AND PERSONAL EFFORT Total hours: 810 Total cost: $265 PROJECT INFORMATION - MAY02-02 Team members Faculty Advisors Client Patrick Hobart (CprE) Dr. John W. Without aid these patients could incur personal injury. Currently no system is available to predict a patient’s attempts to leave the bed unattended. To solve this problem, an electrical sensor system coupled with a communication device will monitor the status of the bed occupant. If danger is imminent, the caregiver is notified in time to assist the patient. INTRODUCTION General Background: Develop a system to predict an individual’s attempts to leave bed unattended Technical Problem: Accurately collect and process electrical sensor data to communicate a bed occupant’s status to a monitoring station Operating Environment: Hospital setting with exposure to liquids and a temperature range of 0 o C – 100 o C Intended users/uses: Monitor primarily old and young patients while providing status information to a caregiver Assumptions  No more than 8 beds will be monitored per monitoring station  System can be disabled when an individual is present to help the occupant Limitations  Design cannot interfere with hospital equipment  Power consumption must be monitored to minimize possible hazards TECHNICAL APPROACH DESIGN REQUIREMENTS Design Objectives  Sensor package: Multiple sensor types to monitor occupant activity  Processor unit: Analyze the sensor data  Communication system: Transmit results of processing to monitoring station  Display unit: Alert caregiver of occupant status using a red (patient out of bed), yellow (patient attempting to leave bed), green (patient comfortably in bed) warning scale Functional Requirements  Status Levels: Provide visual notification of patient’s likelihood to leave the bed  Manual Disable: A means to disable system when a caregiver is with the patient  Error detection: Means to verify performance of the system components Design Constraints  Safe for Intended Users: Because electronic equipment will be used, adequate measures must be taken to prevent electrocution  Comfortable: The sensor system should not mentally or physically cause patient discomfort  Interference: The system must not disrupt hospital equipment due to electromagnetic interference or excessive power consumption  Response time: System must notify caregiver in time to prevent injury Processor Unit Communication System Display Unit Sensor Package Nurse Call System Nurse Data is Collected Data is Analyzed with Prediction Algorithm Result is Transmitted to Display Unit Occupant Status is Displayed Observer Stationed at Display Unit Notifies Nurse to Provide Assistance if Necessary
