DESIGNATED INTERNATIONAL STUTTERING AWARENESS DAY ON THIS DAY October 22nd, 1998 TEAM: THE PINK PANTHER Juana, Abisai and Gerardo

22 October was designated International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) in 1998. The day is intended to raise the public awareness of the millions of people who have the speech disorder of stuttering, including over 3 million Americans.

ON THIS DAY ISAD is organized by four organizations:  American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Special Interest Division #4, Fluency & Fluency Disorders  European League of Stuttering Associations  International Fluency Association  International Stuttering Association ISAD includes an online conference, targeted at people with an interest in stuttering, as well as speech-language pathologists and their clients. In 2007, Central Michigan University expanded the day into Stuttering Awareness Week, which extended for a week after October 22. Although many locales do not have support groups, there are resources for stutterers online and cooperative education groups that work with schools

PASSIVE VOICE. INTRODUCTION

PASSIVE INTRODUCTION. The passive voice is a grammatical construction in which the subject of a sentence or clause denotes the recipient of the action rather than the performer. In the English language, the English passive voice is formed with an auxiliary verb (usually be or get) plus a participle (usually the past participle) of a transitive verb.

EXAMPLE. PRESENT MODALS ActiveThe boys can eat the pie Passive The pie can be eaten by the boys PAST MODALS Active The boys could have eaten the pie Passive The pie could have been eaten by the boys

WHY DO WE USE PASSIVE SENTENCES? We use the passive voice when the receiver of the action is more important in our communication than the one who did it (the actor of the verb). ◦ The president was assassinated this morning. We can use the passive when we don't know who did the action. ◦ The bank was robbed yesterday.

WHY DO WE USE PASSIVE SENTENCES? We use the passive when we don't need to say who did the action. ◦ The bill was signed into law at noon. We can use the passive to avoid saying who did the action. ◦ The employees were laid off just before the holidays.
