Feed the Future Indicators Africa RISING PMMT Training Addis Ababa - Ethiopia, August 17-18 Tamale - Ghana, August 24-25 Bamako - Mali, August 27-28 Sara Signorelli Africa RISING M&E team, IFPRI

3 types of indicators AR wants to collect  Sustainable Intensification Indicators Program-wide, monitor the impact of AR on the 5 dimensions of sustainable intensification… More on this tomorrow!!  Feed the Future Indicators Program-wide and collected across all the FtF programs as USAID requirement, monitor the attainment of the broad FtF goals in Sub-Saharan Africa  Ad-hoc indicators At the discretion of every project and even of every research team. It is not a requirement but if there are some specific aspects that the research teams believe are useful to track, the PMMT offers that possibility

FtF intro Africa RISING

AR FtF Indicators  Number of hectares under improved technologies or management practices as a result of AR assistance  Number of farmers and others who have applied new technologies or management practices as a result of AR assistance  Number of individuals who have received USG supported short-term agricultural sector productivity or food security training  Number of food security private enterprises (for profit), producers organizations, water users associations, women's groups, trade and business associations, and community-based organizations (CBOs) receiving AR assistance  Number of public-private partnerships formed as a result of AR assistance  Number of members of producer organizations and community based organizations receiving AR assistance  Number of new technologies or management practices in one of the following phases of development: (Phase I/II/III)  Number of private enterprises (for profit), producers organizations, water users associations, women's groups, trade and business associations, and community-based organizations (CBOs) that applied new technologies or management practices as a result of AR assistance  Number of Policies/Regulations/Administrative Procedures in each of the following stages of development as a result of AR assistance in each case

When to collect them  When to collect them: USAID requires the data sharing once per year, but the numbers are recorder by seasons, therefore it would be optimal to enter them in the PMMT twice a year (after each season).  When are they due: Every year at the beginning of October! This is a strict deadline set by USAID  Targets: While compiling the data from the current season the researchers are asked to provide targets for the next season, which will then be compared with the actual numbers that will be achieved. Whenever the targets differ from the actual numbers by more than 10%, researchers are required to submit a brief explanation of the discrepancy.

FtF indicators can be collected in 2 ways: Preferred way: directly through the Project Mapping and Monitoring Tool (PMMT) If no/bad internet connection: Through the Excel household and community templates first, and then inputted into the PMMT once a good connection is available. …We will cover both methods during this training! How to collect them

Some of you already collected this information during the past season. Anyone wants to share his experience? Which indicators were particularly difficult to report? How did you solve the difficulties? How to communicate effectively with the rest of the teams in order to avoid collecting the same information multiple times? How to provide meaningful narratives for discrepancies between targets and actual outcomes
