3 Military Life Joined a voluntary ambulance corps for the Italian army Served at the front and was wounded Spent considerable amount of time in hospitals (was background for Farewell to Arms) Met Agnes von Kurowsky- a nurse with whom he fell in love

4 Paris Life Met Hadley Richardson in Chicago and was married to her in 1921 Became the foreign correspondent for Toronto Star and they moved to Paris Moved in a circle of expatriates and authors including Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, Sylvia Beach, James Joyce and F. Scott Fitzgerald Wrote many of his early short stories here

5 Love Life and Key West Fell in love with Pauline Pfeiffer-divorced Hadley- married Pauline Moved to Key West Worked on his novel Farewell to Arms Spent much of his time deep sea fishing and went on a safari to Africa to do big game hunting

7 War Time Traveled to Spain to report on the Spanish Civil War and met a journalist- Martha Gellhorn. Divorced Pauline-married Martha and moved to Cuba Began writing For Whom the Bell Tolls Travelled with Martha throughout beginning of WWII not always in the same places Met another correspondent – Mary Walsh ….married her next after a divorce from Martha Gellhorn

8 Cuba and the later years Returned to Cuba with Mary and worked on The Garden of Eden Travelled to Africa again on safari Experienced some devastating accidents that left him scarred for the rest of his life Won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 for Old Man and the Sea

10 Hemingway’s death July 2 1961 by suicide Father had committed suicide in the same fashion years earlier

11 Writing Style Concise, short, lots of dialogue Description of landscape has importance to story Follows the ‘iceberg theory’ Gives little information, but most of his meaning is underneath the words Was also known for ‘flash fiction’ –very very short story. His most famous one: “For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.”
