1 Goals: Math-5.MD.2 Science-5.P.1.2 Step 1 : Ahead of time, on bulletin board paper, create a blank line plot divided into 8ths. Hang on gym wall. Step 2 : With your students, measure the gym and use masking tape to mark 10 foot sections. This will divide the gym into eighths. Mark the pieces of tape (1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, 8/8). Did you know that a regulation gym is about 80 feet long? Let’s use that information to implement a lesson that will integrate math and science! Step 5 : Repeat the task, but have students crab walk instead of walking backward. Complete Crab Walking Student Page 2. Compare the data. What factors led to the change in distance between the two activities? Step 3 : Each student needs to bring a pencil and a sticky note with their name on it to the gym. Have 5 students at a time line up on the beginning of the court. Set the timer for 10 seconds. Step 4 : Complete Walking Backwards Student Page 1. On go, have them race to see how fast they can walk backwards. Stop them at 10 seconds. Have them determine their distance (using the tape markers) to the nearest eighth. Have them place the sticky note on the line plot. Continue until all students have participated.

2 1/81/43/81/25/83/47/88/8 Fraction of 80 feet traveled in 10 seconds (Walking Backwards) Create a line plot of the class data below. Remember, each X stands for one student. Name_______________________Student Page 1 1.What was the greatest distance achieved by any one student? ______________________________________ 2.What was the shortest distance achieved by any one student? ______________________________________ 3.What is the distance covered by most of the students? _____________________________________________ 4.What factors effected the speed of the students? _____________________________________________ 5.How could students increase their speed? _____________________________________________ 6.How many people walked at least 40 feet? __________________________________________________________ 7. How many total feet did the class walk? _____________________________________________
