1 Kingdom Fungi Definition:
5 phylum Were classified as plants Are found on every continent Are found on every Definition: Fungi are multicellular heterotrophs that receive their food by absorbing the molecules around them. Fungi are not plants; they do not contain chlorophyll and therefore are neither green in colour, nor producers.

2 Classification Fungi are classified according to the way they reproduce The five categories for classification are: Basidiomycota Ascomycota Zygomycota Fungi inperfecti Chytridiomycota

3 Facts on Fungi Fungi are over 90 million years old
They were originally classified as plants Now are considered closer to animals in relation Fungi are multicellular heterotrophs that decompose matter All phylum can produce asexually as well as sexually In a thimble of soil there can be up to a mile of hyphae

4 Basidiomycota Referred to as club fungi Most recognized fungi
They produce group spores or basidiospores, on microscopic club like structures called basidia For asexual reproduction the hyphae form conidia which break off and form new hyphae which will continue to grow until the process is repeated

5 Ascomycota Ascomycota are known as the sac fungi because of the shape of the asci Ascomycota are the largest phylum in kingdom fungi Not known for fruiting bodies but are very useful to humans Have the ability to forcibly move their ascospores

6 Zygomycota Know as the conjugation fungi
Create self contained zygospores Includes certain molds including black bread mold (Rhizopus stolonifer)

7 Fungi Imperfecti Do not fit into any other category
Not much is know about this phylum This is a “made up” phylum to help Mycologists

8 Chytridiomycota This is the simplest of the phylum of kingdom fungi
Some forms are singular celled Only predominate aquatic phylum The oldest fungi Also the only fungi to a flagellum

9 Lichens and Mycorrhizae
Lichens and Mycorrhizae represent a mutual relationship between fungi and plants Lichens are symbolic of the mutual relationship between algae and a basidimycota or ascomycota mycorrhizae is a relationship between usually zygomycota or basidimycota and plant roots

10 Fungi In Saskatchewan There are over 450 different, photographed and recorded species of fungi in Saskatchewan Have caused some of the worst wheat disasters in the parries In 1916, a fungus wiped out 100 million bushels of wheat Several different types of lichens live in Saskatchewan

11 Summary Kingdom Fungi have 5 phylum
Fungi are decomposers and not producers Fungi are classified by their way of reproducing Where considered plants until recently Have been around for 90 million year or possibly more Have fruiting bodies we know as mushrooms Spores are released into the air for sexual reproduction Responsible for: Making bread rise Turning sugar into alcohol Creating different tastes of cheese Penicillin and other antibiotics Diseases both in humans and plants
