Egypt is located along the Nile river, located to the east of the Sahara. The Nile is the only freshwater source in the area. The river provided protection and isolation for the civilization.

 Organized society  Pharaoh- King or Queen:  Considered a god (immortality)  Head of religion  Monarchy and imperialistic

At the top were the gods, such as Ra, Osiris, and Isis. Egyptians believed that the gods controlled the universe. Therefore, it was important to keep them happy. They could make the Nile overflow, cause famine, or even bring death. Because the people of Egypt believed that their pharaohs were gods, they entrusted their rulers with many responsibilities. Protection was at the top of the list. The pharaoh directed the army in case of a foreign threat or an internal conflict.

 Egyptians were polythiestic  Anthropomorphic (human-change)  Ra- head god (sun god)  Osiris- father underworld (judge the dead)  Isis-mother  Horus-son  Maat- truth, justice, and order.

 Marriage: An agreement was drawn up at the start of a marriage, assigning a portion of the man's wealth to the wife and any children to provide for them should a divorce occur at a later time. The woman also brought items into the marriage, but they remained her property to be passed on her children.

 Women of Ancient Egypt had many more rights than most women of other cultures during the same time period. Egyptian women were considered full citizens and could own their own property. After getting married, a woman did not give up property rights to her husband. A divorced woman could claim part of her former husband’s wealth to support herself and her children. When a man went to war, the wife ran the family business in his absence. Women typically had full charge of the home.

Egyptians believed that the body was the link to a spiritual existence in the afterlife. The body was mummified so the spirit could get needed food and drink in the afterlife. In case the body was destroyed or damaged, magical spells were placed on a statue of the deceased so the spirit could continue to have their needs met.

The pyramids were built as a shrine towards the pharaohs. They also represented the pharaohs‘ burial chamber, which inside held their treasures and riches. They set many booby traps to guard these precious belongings.
