1 Emma What was 19 th Century Britain like? Consider: Balls Marriage Social class Education Industrial revolution

2 Chapters 1-5 How does Emma appear to us so far? What aspects of the novel do you find funny? How is Jane Austen mistress of natural dialogue?

3 Chapter 1 – considerable irony to show Emma’s nature – she is spoiled. Self-willed, used to getting her own way “highly esteeming Miss Taylor’s judgement, but directed chiefly by her own.” p3 Knightley’s satire “Who cried the most?” Chapter 3 - brings together the main elements of Highbury society Emma needs someone new to mould now Miss Taylor has married Emma’s snobbery towards Harriet’s friends Chapter 4 – Emma’s need for a companion, although selfish also humanises her for the reader. Emma enjoys playing and condescending to Harriet Chapter 5 – natural ease of dialogue Knightley ironic about Emma in a kindly way “Emma has been mistress of the house and of you all.”
