Introducing Unit Specifications and Unit Assessment Support Packs National 1 and 2

Unit Assessment  Assessments can be designed to provide evidence across more than one Unit or Outcome – combined assessments  Flexible and open Evidence Requirements in Units such as presenting evidence in written, practical or recorded forms such as photo or video.  Greater range of techniques and methodologies for assessment – encouraged through Unit assessment support packages  Opportunities to gather naturally occurring evidence – assessment as part of learning and teaching

Fashion and Textile Technology: Unit Structure National 3National 4National 5 Fashion and Textile Technology: Textile Technologies Fashion and Textile Technology: Fashion/Textile Item Development Fashion and Textile Technology: Fashion and Textile Choices AVU – Making a Fashion/ Textile Item Practical Activity Assessment Task

Key points: Fashion and Textile Technology Units  standards remain the same  designed to generate evidence in appropriate ways  have a hierarchical Unit structure that provide progression from National 3 to Higher  development of knowledge and skills throughout  has added value assessment that increases opportunities for personalisation and choice  in the first 2 years it will be mandatory to use SQA materials

Unit Specifications UnitFashion/Textile Item Development Outcome 1Plan the making of straightforward fashion/ textile items using paper patterns by: Assessment Standards 1.1 Developing a solution to satisfy design specification points within a given brief. 1.2 Producing a work plan with a logical work sequence and a requisition for appropriate textiles, equipment and tools

Unit Specifications Evidence Requirements for this Unit:  Assessors should use their professional judgement, subject knowledge and experience, and understanding of their learners, to determine the most appropriate ways to generate evidence and the conditions and contexts in which they are used.  Evidence may be presented for individual outcomes, or it may be gathered for the unit as a whole through integrating assessment in a single assessment event. If the latter approach is used it must be clear how the evidence covers each outcome.

Unit Specifications For Outcome 2 of this Unit learners will be required to provide evidence of:  2.1 Setting up equipment correctly and according to safety guidelines  2.2 Using equipment and tools correctly and according to safety guidelines  2.3 Making the designed fashion/textile item according to the design solution and the plan Evidence may be in the form of written/oral/video/sketches. Evidence for 2.1 and 2.3 may be a checklist.

Unit Assessment Support Packages - purpose UASPs can be used to: Assess your candidates Adapt for your own assessment programmes Help you develop your own assessments Help to ensure that evidence meets the requirements of the Outcomes and Assessment Standards.

UASPs – key features  Valid from August 2013  Designed to encourage professional judgement  Provide broad-based tasks – allow assessors to choose appropriate context and forms of evidence  Show range of approaches to generating assessment evidence  Give information on the type of evidence which could be gathered and how this is to be judged against Assessment Standards

Fashion & Textile Technology UASPs Package 1  Unit by Unit approach N3, N4 and N5 – discrete assessment tasks for each Unit and combining of skills within Units Package 2  Portfolio approach: Combined across Units N3, N4 and N5 Package 3  Combined approach N3, N4 and N5 (Two tasks)

National 4 Added Value Unit  Makes the Course more than the sum of its parts  Builds on current Course assessment approaches  Defined as breadth, challenge and/or application as outlined in Building the Curriculum 5  Involves accumulation, assimilation, integration and/or application of skills, knowledge and understanding  Controlled assessment –setting conducting and marking

N4 AV Unit: Making a Fashion/Textile Item. To achieve this unit, learners will: 1.Produce a Fashion/Textile item in response to a given brief by: 1.1 Identifying specification points in the brief 1.2 Producing an idea and a plan for the making of a fashion/textile item in response to the brief and addressing the specification points 1.3 Making the fashion/textile item using appropriate textile construction techniqes and safe working practices 1.4 Reviewing the completed and finished fashion/textile item against the brief

N5 Assessment Task  Controlled assessment is SQA’s approach to developing assessments (setting), the conditions of assessment (conducting), and marking assessments (marking).  The practical activity will be internally assessed using marking guidelines issued by SQA  An SQA appointed Team Leader (Verifier) will visit a sample of centres to quality assure the marking of the National 5 Fashion and Textile Technology Course Assessment Task.

Moving on  Workshop 1 and 2 will give you the opportunity to look at the Unit Specifications and Unit Assessment Support Packages in detail.
