1 Study abroad in Thailand May 2016 Program led by Dr. Melanie Marks

2 Thailand is called the “land of smiles”… Learn about SE Asia and economic development as we explore this very beautiful country.

3 Get to know its beautiful people… Visit a rural school, talking to students and teachers. Spend the day in a Karen village.

4 Explore Thailand’s history… Travel on famous bridge over River Kwai. Ride the Death Railroad built by POWs. See Khmer-style ruins in former Siam capital.

5 Visit historic places… Visit war cemetery, Three Pagodas Pass, sunken temple, etc.

6 Learn about Buddhism… How it is a national sponsored religion. How it infiltrates the culture and daily life of the average Thai citizen.

7 Shop and eat in local markets… Live life like the locals. Learn to cook traditional dishes.

8 Appreciate the exotic… Visit floating market and open air markets. Visit controversial projects such as the tiger temple and Burmese elephant camp. Wear a Burmese longyi?

9 Explore Thailand’s natural environment… Visit places very dear to the Thai people and protected by order of the king.

10 Class for Thailand study abroad: Econ 300: Introduction to SE Asia – NO prerequisite. – Class will meet intensively for 4 days on campus prior to departure. – Content includes general economics, environmental economics, international trade, Thai history, introduction to Buddhism and connection to economy, social issues, etc. – Waives GOAL 9. – Note that this was formerly Econ 475 (prior to 2015 catalog).

11 All of this at affordable price… 14 days Exotic itinerary Travel cost expected to be $2675. Note that the first $400 constitutes a nonrefundable deposit. Students who drop out of the program might lose more than this amount if a replacement is not found and funds have been expended.
